Congregate & Home Delivered Meals:
The Senior Nutrition Program provides a nutritious, noontime meal and nutrition education for persons age 60 and older.
The purpose of the program is to:

  • Maintain and improve the health of older adults
  • Preserve and support their independence
  • Outreach - to access community resources
  • Prevent premature and unnecessary institutionalization.

Senior Nutrition Program meals provide at least 1/3 of the daily recommended dietary allowance. Meals are served at eight congregate sites in Clark County and in the residences of the homebound elderly. Participant donations are necessary to supplement meal costs and extend service.

Services:

  1. Congregate Meals are provided for older adults in a group setting to reduce their isolation and loneliness. Reservations are required 24 hours in advance and may be placed by calling 937-323-9688 before 10:00 a.m.
  2. Home-delivered meals are available to older adults who are homebound, unable to prepare their own meals and have no one to prepare them. A home visit is conducted to determine eligibility.
  3. Nutrition consultations are available upon request.

The purpose of Nutrition Education is to develop:

  • A positive attitude toward good nutrition
  • Knowledge and skills allowing participants to make appropriate food choices
  • Skills to help the participants identify resources for sound food and nutrition information.

Meals on Wheels:
Meals on Wheels provides a balanced noon and evening meal at mid-day, Monday through Friday, to individuals age 60 and older who cannot meet this need on their own.
The goals of Meals on Wheels are:

  • To assist older persons in remaining in their own home
  • To preserve and maintain proper and adequate nutrition.

The noon meal consists of meat, potato or potato substitute, vegetable, fruit or fruit juice, bread, butter, milk and dessert. The optional light evening meal consists of soup, sandwich and fruit. Both meals are delivered at the same time and are prepared by various caterers in the Clark County area. Restricted diets such as diabetic, renal, low salt & cholesterol are available with physician order.

Recipients must be unable to prepare their own meals and have no one to prepare meals for them. This includes people recovering from an illness or surgery, isolated homebound seniors, or someone coping with diet restrictions. A telephone assessment will determine eligibility.

Volunteer drivers using their own vehicles deliver the majority of the meals. A small percentage is delivered using Elderly United vehicles.

A reasonable fee is charged for the noon meal, and a smaller additional amount is charged for the optional evening meal. The recipient is sent a statement on a monthly basis for payment.

If you are interested in receiving meals, or would like to volunteer as a driver, contact 937-323-4948 and ask for Meals on Wheels.
